Below are some collected, eclectic quotes.

Let not sorrow whither the joyful heart
Nor stones of affliction wear away your season of happiness;
Nobody knows the hidden future --
Wine, a lover and enjoying the heart's desire are all you need.

The Ruba'iyat
Omar Khayyam

The past is never dead. It’s not even past...

The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable.

Only love can quiet the fear
of love, and only love can save
from diminishment the love
that we must lose to have

The only person wise about the future is the person who keeps silent.

Man was made for Joy & Woe;
and when this we rightly know
Thro' the World we safely go.
Joy & Woe are woven fine,
A Clothing for the Soul divine;
Under every grief & pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.

All the worst sins are denials and rejections of love, refusals to love.

Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.

The things we fear the most have already happened to us.

To love someone deeply gives you strength. Being loved by somebody deeply gives you courage.

Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.

Reward bitterness with care.

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.

The only lasting beauty is the beauty of the heart.

All our dreams come true.

If you talk about things you have not experienced, you are wasting your and other people's time.

Nothing in life is to be feared.
It is only to be understood.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

The power of thought is the only thing over which any human being has unquestionable control. We have the power of self determination, the ability chose what our thoughts and actions will be. If you direct your thought and control your emotions, you will ordain your destiny. Take charge of your life. You are what you think!

It's a simple formula: do your best and somebody might like it.

A person who longs to leave a place where he lives is an unhappy person.

The heavier the burden, the closer our lives come to the earth, the more real and truthful they become.

"Betrayal is an inevitable part of life. In order to survive, you must entrust others which leaves you susceptible to betrayal. However, learning from what has happened will inevitably make you stronger."

From: The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Milan Kundera and a quote attibuted to Kundera

Prince Andrei not only knew that he would die but felt that he was dying, that he was already half dead. He was conscious of an alienation from everything earthly, and a strange and joyous lightness of being. Without anxiety or impatience he awaited what was to come. That formidable, eternal, remote, and unknown presence, which he had constantly been aware of all his life, was now close to him and by reason of that strange lightness of being that he experience, almost comprehensible and palpable....

Prince Andrei, War and Peace - Tolstoy

You bring me so much joy
And then you bring me
More joy

Simplicity, clarity, singleness: these are the attributes that give our lives power and vividness and joy as they are also the marks of great art.

We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.

Do not seek the because--in love there is no because, no reason, no explanation, no solutions.

You can play the game now and then, to heighten passion, but profound loves are the loves which suit your true self, and they alone will satisfy you. The more you act like yourself the nearer you come to a fulfillment of your real needs.

We do not come into this world we come out of it, as leaves from a tree. As the ocean "waves" the universe "peoples". Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature, a unique action of the total universe.

All for love, and nothing for reward.

Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawn light smiles on you leaving my contentment
I wait in this place where the sun never shines
I wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves
You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye window
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out I felt my own need just beginning ... ... ...

Where fear is present, wisdom can not be.

Let everything be allowed to do what it naturally does, so that its nature will be satisfied.

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.

The person you love is the catalyst, not the missing part. The truth is, no one outside yourself can make you whole.

-build your life piled high wih other sorts of satisfactions: friends, family, work, interests, and while you are doing that in a mutual benefit you'll be freeing the same love object from having to be all things to you.

The act of love puts you (us) in touch with the ability to love - our lovingness - and that is the missing part you have been craving.

This is how it works: [By inspiring you to express your love, your beloved connects you with this element in you that's been missing] It isn't - repeat, isn't - that your loved one fills you up and makes you whole and you are all jagged edges without him/her.

The worse a situation becomes the less it takes to turn it around the bigger the upside.

I'm only rich because I know when I'm wrong.

The focused mind can pierce through stone.

You can give your whole attention only when you care, which means that you really love.

Be a pessimist in intellect.
An optimist in will.

The first rule is not to lose.
The second rule is not to forget the first rule.

Let a man who has to make his fortune in life remember this maxim: Attacking is the only secret. Dare and the world yields, or if it beats you sometimes, dare it again and you will succeed.

All in all
Each man in all men
All men in each man
All being in each being
Each being in all being
All in each
Each in all
All distinctions are mind, by mind, in mind, of mind
No distinctions no mind to distinguish

Silences make the real conversations between friends.

The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said

Gratitude is the heart's memory.

What your mind focuses upon your mind brings into existence.

If you have love you will do all things well.

And I sooth'd day after day
Till upon the ground I stray;
And I smil'd night after night,
Seeking only for delight.

And I saw before me shine
Clusters of the wandering vine,
And many a lovely flower & tree
Stretch'd their blossoms out to me.

Nothing is more difficult and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.

Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt.

Sam, from the movie Ronin

Worry is a form of fear, and all forms of fear produce fatigue. A man who has learned not to feel fear will find the fatigue of daily life enormously diminished.

Tyranny functions only if taken seriously, and humor is the first defense against it.

When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.

Who gave you permission to re-arrange me?
Certainly not me.
Who told you that it was all right to love me?
Certainly, certainly not me ...

Prices move in small increments during quiet times. When a crowd becomes either spooked or elated, prices begin to jump. Imagine bidding for a life preserver aboard a sinking ship -- that's how prices leap when masses of traders become emotional about a trend. An astute trader tries to enter the market during quiet times and take profits during wild times.

If you don't confront your pain then the energy of that suppressed pain when it is remembered it surfaces as hostility -- hostility is nothing but remembered pain that we did not deal with in the past.

Fear is the anticipation of pain in the future and the worry that we will be unable to deal with it because we didn't know how to deal with it in the past. Depression is the depletion of energy that occurs because of this.

Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy.

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.

Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.

The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.

There is but one unconditional commandment, which is that we should seek incessantly, with fear and trembling, so to vote and to act as to bring about the very largest total universe of good which we can see.

An unlearned carpenter of my acquaintance once said in my hearing: "There is very little difference between one man and another; but what little there is, is very important." This distinction seems to me to go to the root of the matter.

There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours.

I have brought myself, by long meditation, to the conviction that the human being with settled purpose must accomplish it, and that nothing can resist a will which will stake even existence upon its fulfillment.

No soul is desolate as long as there is a human being for whom it can feel trust and reverence.

The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.

It is the privilege of those who fear love to murder those who do not fear it!

To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.

The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.

Always do what you're afraid to do.

Nothing in the cry

Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others.

Love? What is love? he thought. Love hinders death. Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone. Love is God, and to die means that I, a particle of love, shall return to the general and eternal source.

It's only a dream
only a dream
That's fading now
fading away
It's only a dream
just a memory
without any where to stay

If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone. And afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.

To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.

One gift creates appreciation, many gifts create expectation.

That it fades out from kiss to kiss;
For everything that's lovely is
But a brief, dreamy, kind delight.

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.

Love to faults is always blind,
Always to joy inclin'd,
Lawless, wing'd, & unconfin'd,
And breaks all chains from every mind.

We think so because other people think so;
Or because - or because - after all, we do think so;
Or because we were told so, and think we must think so;
Or because we once thought so, and think we still think so;
Or because having thought so, we think we will think so.

The only way to measure a lover
Is by the grandeur of the beloved.

... Stocks want to hurt you, make you feel stupid -- they trade to maximize pain. I learned a long time ago to listen but avoid being talked into anything. Stocks are a voting mechanism, pure and simple. They are a collective vote of expectations of each company's future fundamentals. If investors think business will improve, that earnings estimates will rise, then the stock is going up. If investors think the end is near, a company is about to roll over, a stock will go down. It doesn't mean that those fundamentals will ever happen.

This thing [2000] feels like the finale at a July Fourth fireworks at Shea Stadium. You'd hate to leave before it's really over, but we should beat the crowds to the parking lot.

Those "families with substantial assets" had wealth, but it wasn't static. Every generation it shrank unless they chased returns. No rest for the weary. But they don't like risk. Well, too bad. I think what I learned is that wealth comes not just from taking risk but from constantly taking risks.

Money would flow uphill if it had to, to fund these high-margin intellectual enterprises.

Money sloshes to margin! The stock market sorts all this stuff out.

A stock is nothing more than the current value of a company's future profits.

Capital sloshing around, seeking its highest return, naturally funds highly profitable companies.

How to Stay Young

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

And always remember; Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

Any who act as if freedom's defenses are to be found in suppression and suspcion and fear confess to a doctrine that is alien to America.

Love is an attempt to change a piece of a dream-world into reality.

Words are just words and without heart they have no meaning.

Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.

But we embrace that pain in order to take money ouf of the markets. In fact, pain is often the signal that a position should be taken immediately because discomfort exposes the fear of being right as much as the fear of being wrong.

To each thing, its own

The only thing that matters on Wall Street is growth ... oxygenated -- pure growth even if the company is losing money.

One doesn't care where the stock has been one cares where the stock is going. On Wall Street what matters is the company's outlook.

What drives take overs is when the acquirer can immediately increase its earnings by the acquisition.

In takeovers you want 1) nobody has control of the company 2) great brand names, market share, 3) great distribution 4) a good fit 5) PE 12 - 15.

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, or the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or adrift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.

Unknown ... a teacher's favorite saying ...

The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes.

In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perserverance.

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Tell me what you brag about, and I'll tell you what you lack.

To be loved means to be consumed. To love is to give light with inexhaustible oil. To be loved is to pass away, to love is to endure."

Rainer Maria Rilke I was not aware of the moment when I first crossed the threshold of this life. What was the power that made me open out into this vast mystery like a bud in the forest at midnight! When in the morning I looked upon the light I felt in a moment that I was no stranger in this world, that the inscrutable without name and form had taken me in its arms in the form of my own mother. Even so, in death the same unknown will appear as ever known to me. And because I love this life, I know I shall love death as well. The child cries out when from the right breast the mother takes it away, in the very next moment to find in the left one its consolation.

That's one of the hardest lessons for a guy like me who has no interest in business but now runs a multimillion-dollar enterprise. A contract is not much of a legal document. It's just an agreement that two people who trust each other have made. You can't enter into a contract with anyone that you wouldn't make a handshake deal with, because everything comes down to a handshake deal.

Penn Jillette

As any horseplayer knows, the odds don't tell you what will happen. All they do is tell you what people with the courage of their convictions are thinking today.

Andrew Cassel

True love makes the thought of death frequent, easy, without terrors; it merely becomes the standard of comparison, the price one would pay for many things.

...when life manifests itself in its greatest ebullience there too is death most formidable.

The vision ahead may seem a bit bleak but my feeling about life is a curious kind of triumphant feeling about -- seeing it bleak -- know it is so and walking into it fearlessly because one has no choice -- enjoying one's consciousness.

Depression is rage turned inward

If you want to increase your happiness -- including your financial well being. Find concrete ways to express your gratitude.

When I have a toothache ... I discover not having a toothache is a wonderful thing. But when I do not have a toothache I do not seem to be happy ... I look deeply in the present moment and see that I have a non toothache ... that can make me very happy already.

Work encourages work.

The difficulty in life is the choice.

If there is a state where the soul can find a resting-place secure enough to establish itself and concentrate its entire being there, with no need to remember the past or reach into the future, where time is nothing to it, where the present runs on indefinitely but this duration goes unnoticed, with no sign of the passing of time, and no other feeling of deprivation or enjoyment, pleasure or pain, desire or fear than the simple feeling of existence, a feeling that fills our soul entirely, as long as this state lasts, we can call ourselves happy, not with a poor, incomplete and relative happiness such as we find in the pleasures of life, but with a sufficient, complete and perfect happiness which leaves no emptiness to be filled in the soul.

I think that all of us whoever we are ... I think it is positively astonishing.. that what we like to think our own deepest emotions were in fact initially Shakespeare's thoughts ... and there is no other writer you could make so extraordinary a statement. You and I experience fierce emotions Charlie [Rose]... those emotions which of we would like to feel are indiginous to us which emerge from our own hearts are in fact Shakespeare's thoughts. In some deep sense our relationship... our sense of what the ratio is between language, thought, and feeling owes more to Shakespeare than to anyone else.

This is an actual quote ...

Mutual respect implies discretion and reserve even in love itself; it means preserving as much liberty as possible to those whose life we share. We must distrust our instinct of intervention, for the desire to make one's own will prevail is often disguised under the mask of solicitude.

In love there is no measure of time.

Imagination wanders like a god.

It's not how right or how wrong you are that matters, but how much you make when right and how much you do not lose when wrong.

To worry is to prepare for failure.

Appreciation is the doorway into the heart.

Looking lowers barriers.

Your experience of relation to the world --whether you are one with it, part of it, or alien to it --depends on what you believe to be the case.

Your relatedness to the world is another self-confirming myth.

Love the heart that hurts you... never hurt the heart that loves you.
